Shungite Water, Done Properly
Shungite water is a traditional Karelian preparation, and it is easy to get slightly wrong in ways that make no difference at all. Here is the method, the maintenance nobody mentions, and an honest account of what the research does and doesn't show.
Use the right stone
This is the mistake that matters most, and it is the one almost everyone makes: polished pieces do not work for water. Polishing seals the surface. A pyramid, a sphere, a merkaba — beautiful objects, wrong tool. They belong on a shelf.
What you want is raw or tumbled stone. Raw has more surface area and is the traditional choice. Tumbled is smoother to handle and easier to clean. Either is fine.
The method
- Rinse first. New stones carry carbon dust from cutting and handling. Rinse under running water until it runs clear — this may take a couple of minutes the first time, and it is why your first batch may look grey.
- Use roughly 150–200 g of stone per litre. More stone is not better; it just displaces water.
- Glass or ceramic. Not metal, not plastic if you can avoid it.
- Leave it 6 to 24 hours. Overnight is the usual rhythm. Beyond about a day you gain nothing.
- Decant and drink. Top the vessel up and let it infuse again.
A 100g stone comes free with every order — enough for roughly half a litre at the usual ratio. If water is your main interest, our raw 300g or 500g pieces are the sensible starting point.
The maintenance nobody mentions
Shungite works in water partly as a sorbent — it binds and holds certain substances. That has a consequence people rarely spell out: what it removes, it keeps. A stone left in service indefinitely is a stone that is full.
- Brush the stones every couple of weeks with a clean toothbrush under running water. A biofilm builds up otherwise, as it would on anything sitting in water.
- Replace stones used for water roughly every three months. This is the single most-skipped step.
- Stones used only for display or kept near devices never need replacing. The replacement schedule is about water use, not about the stone wearing out.
Things that look wrong but aren't
- Orange rust on raw pieces. Pyrite in the stone oxidises in air and water. Normal. Brush it off if it bothers you.
- The stone feels wet for a long time. Classic black shungite absorbs a little water and dries slowly. Normal.
- Grey water on the first fill. Carbon dust. Rinse more thoroughly.
- The stone marks your fingers. Also carbon, also normal, and it settles.
What the research shows, and what it doesn't
Shungite has a real, documented history as a water treatment material in Russia, and it is approved there for use in drinking-water treatment systems. Research at Petrozavodsk State University in Karelia has examined its behaviour as a sorbent and filter medium, and work involving Kazan Federal University and Rice University has looked at carbon materials of this type binding metal and radionuclide cations from water.
That body of work is about sorption — a physical and chemical binding process, the same broad principle behind activated carbon in a domestic water filter. It is a genuine material property and it is why the official approvals exist.
What that research does not establish is a health outcome. You will find sites attributing antioxidant effects to shungite water on the strength of studies into purified C60 fullerene — including a 2016 study on mice under UV exposure. Those studies tested isolated C60 in solution, not water that has had a stone sitting in it. Shungite contains fullerenes in small amounts within a much larger carbon structure; the leap from one to the other is not supported, and we are not going to make it.
Our position. Shungite is a certified natural sorbent with a long tradition of use in Karelia, and shungite water is part of that tradition. We sell the stone. We do not sell it as a treatment for anything, and if a seller tells you their stone cures something, that should lower your confidence in everything else they say.
